What are your Wii games worth?
Brace yourself: the great majority of Wii games are worth almost nothing. Nintendo sold over 100 million Wiis to an audience that mostly bought the same dozen party titles, and the shovelware that followed was printed in enormous quantities. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and the mini-game compilations are among the most common video games on earth.
The exceptions are sharp, though. A handful of late-run, low-print and niche titles — particularly Japanese-developed action and RPG releases that shipped in small numbers near the end of the console's life — sell for real money. On Wii more than any other platform, the answer is "look up the odd ones, bundle the rest."
Sort by "have I heard of this?" — then invert it
On most consoles the famous games are the valuable ones. On Wii it's close to the opposite. The titles everyone owned were pressed in the tens of millions; the ones nobody bought at the time were pressed in the tens of thousands. If there's a game in the stack you don't recognise and it isn't shovelware, that's the one to look up.
The reliable no-value pile: bundled sports and party titles, licensed movie and TV tie-ins, fitness and dance titles, and the wave of budget mini-game collections. These are worth bundling as a lot, not listing individually.
Condition — discs and the pieces that go missing
Wii discs are standard DVDs and they scratch. The data side is the grade: light scuffs are fine, deep marks across the surface cause read failures. Photograph the underside.
What goes missing on this platform is the paper. Wii cases held a manual and often an insert or health-and-safety leaflet, and both vanished quickly in family households. Cases also crack at the hinge. A complete copy — original case, undamaged art, manual, disc — is worth calling out precisely because it's less common than it should be for a console this recent.
The variant traps on Wii
- Nintendo Selects. The budget re-release line, with a distinctive red case rather than the standard white one. Later print, larger numbers, worth less than the original.
- Region. The Wii is region-locked. North American, PAL and Japanese copies are separate markets.
- Peripheral bundles. Plenty of Wii titles shipped with plastic — a wheel, a balance board, instruments, a zapper. The game alone and the complete bundle are different listings, and the peripheral is sometimes worth more than the disc.
- GameCube compatibility. Early Wii models play GameCube discs and have the controller ports; later "Family Edition" models don't. That affects hardware value, not game value, but it comes up constantly when selling a console alongside a collection.
The realistic outcome
A typical box of thirty Wii games from a family cupboard is, honestly, worth a modest amount as a single lot — and that is a perfectly good outcome. It clears the shelf, someone gets a working library cheaply, and you don't spend a weekend photographing Wii Play. Spend your effort on the two or three unusual titles and let the rest go together.
