StarTropics is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES, blending top-down exploration with real-time combat across a tropical archipelago. Players control Mike Jones, a young baseball player on a quest to rescue his archaeologist uncle from alien invaders, navigating islands, dungeons, and towns while solving puzzles and defeating enemies with a yo-yo weapon. Released in 1990 exclusively in North America, the game is notable for its unique setting, humor-infused narrative, and the infamous in-game letter that required physical mail correspondence to obtain a crucial password—a pioneering example of interactive media spanning physical and digital spaces. StarTropics became a cult classic and launched a brief franchise, with its sequel, Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II, following in 1994.
