How to spot a reproduction (fake) retro game
Most reproductions give themselves away on the label and board: a slightly blurry or too-glossy label, a cartridge that opens with a normal (not security) screw, and a circuit board with a small SD-style chip or a sticker instead of the original mask-ROM. When in doubt, compare against known-genuine photos and ask the seller directly.
The quick checks
Label print quality
Genuine labels are crisp with accurate colours. Repros are often slightly pixelated, off-colour, too shiny, or misaligned. Look closely at small text and logos — that's where cheap printing shows.
The screws / shell
Many original cartridges use a special security screw (a 3.8mm or 4.5mm "gamebit"). If a cart opens with an ordinary Phillips screwdriver, or the shell colour/texture is slightly off, be suspicious.
The board inside
If you can open it (or the seller can send a photo): originals have proper mask-ROM chips and clean factory boards. Repros often show a microSD slot, a small flash chip, hand-soldered joints, or a bare green board with a label sticker.
Box & manual
Reproduction boxes and manuals are common and often honestly sold as such — but a repro box around a loose cart is not "complete-in-box." Check print sharpness, cardboard weight, and whether inserts match the era.
Price and the seller
A "sealed rare game" at a fraction of its market value is a red flag. And the simplest safeguard: a good seller states plainly whether an item is original, reproduction, or custom — vagueness is the warning sign.
Questions
Are reproduction games illegal or a scam?
A repro isn't a scam if it's sold honestly as a reproduction — plenty of players buy repros to play expensive games affordably. It only becomes fraud when a repro is passed off as an original at original prices. Always buy on clear disclosure.
How do I protect myself buying a pricey retro game online?
Buy where the item's authenticity is disclosed and your payment is held in escrow until you've received it and confirmed it's genuine — so a "not as described" copy can be disputed before the seller is paid. See buying & selling safely.
How does Vidsmark handle this?
Sellers label each item Original / Reproduction / Custom, that claim is recorded on the order at checkout, and escrow lets a buyer dispute a mismatch before funds release. Honest repros are welcome; misrepresented ones aren't.
